Abigail Humphries
A documentary photographer specialising in topics surrounding human emotions.
I was born in 2001 and moved around a lot as a child, spending most of my early years on the south coast of the UK and my teenage years in Wiltshire. I was always fascinated by photographs and when gifted a camera I immediately was drawn to capturing the natural world around me.
My journey into documentary photography has been profoundly shaped by my personal experiences with grief, loss and how my emotions manifested in different ways over time compared with that of others. My work focuses on the delicate, often silent, moments of mourning. I strive to capture the subtle expressions of sorrow and, the quiet strength in the face of loss. Through my lens, I aim to convey that every emotion in grief is valid and that there is no right or wrong way for anyone to navigate their own personal journey through it. My hope is that others will feel support and understanding as they tread their own path and that my work helps alleviate any burden of guilt or shame for not always conforming to the social expectations of what grief should look or feel like.
I draw inspiration from others such as Kelly O’Brien as she is a creator rather than just a photographer, taking her work that step further. I continue to grow my own skills and love to explore new techniques and use new mediums such as bookmaking and videography. In doing this I hope my work reaches more people, becomes more emotive and sparks new conversation on topics that are often treated as if they were taboo.
